Epoxy and polyaspartic are the two resins behind most garage and shop floors, and they are often framed as rivals when in practice they are frequently used together. Epoxy is a rigid, thicker-building resin that has coated floors for decades. Polyaspartic is a fast-curing aliphatic polyurea that is thinner per coat, more flexible, and more color-stable in sunlight.
Cure time is the most visible difference. Polyaspartic can cure in hours, which is what makes single-day installs and a same-evening return to foot traffic possible. Epoxy cures more slowly, so an epoxy-based floor usually spans multiple days as each coat sets before the next goes down.
UV stability is the next consideration. Standard epoxy tends to amber, or yellow, under sustained sunlight, so it is a poor fit for sunny patios or doorways in direct light. Polyaspartic topcoats hold their color and are the better choice wherever the floor sees the sun.
Temperature tolerance and working time round out the picture. Polyaspartic cures across a wider temperature range, including colder conditions, which helps with off-season installs, but it also sets fast and leaves a short working window, so it rewards an experienced crew. Epoxy is more forgiving to apply but fussier about cold and moisture while it cures.
For most homeowners the practical answer is a hybrid: a base coat for build and adhesion with a polyaspartic topcoat for speed, color stability, and wear resistance. Choose based on how the floor will be used, how much sun it gets, your timeline, and your budget rather than on the resin name alone.

In Northern Utah the question comes up every winter, and the short answer is that a coating can often be installed in the cold months with the right system and a controlled space. The calendar matters less than the conditions inside the garage on install day.

The concrete needs to be above the dew point so moisture does not condense and interfere with the bond, and the coating has to be within its working temperature. A closed, heated garage can hold those conditions even when it is freezing outside.
This is one area where polyaspartic has a clear edge. It cures over a wider and lower temperature range than standard epoxy, which struggles as temperatures fall. That is why many cold-season installs lean on polyaspartic or polyurea systems.
There are practical limits. A garage that cannot be sealed and heated, a slab carrying a lot of moisture, or a floor still wet from tracked-in snow can all push a job to a better day. A careful installer measures slab temperature and moisture before starting rather than assuming.

One reason people choose a coated floor is how little upkeep it needs. Day to day, the main job is keeping grit off the surface, since fine sand and dirt are what create the light scratches that dull a floor over time. A dust mop or soft broom handles most of it.
For a deeper clean, damp mop with a mild cleaner, then rinse or squeegee. A coated floor shrugs off water, so you can hose it out in the garage and wipe up spills without much worry. What to avoid is harsh solvents and aggressive abrasive pads, which can dull the finish.
Winter deserves a little extra attention in a snowy climate. Road salt and de-icing slush that drip off a vehicle are easy to rinse away, and doing so protects the concrete and the joints at the edges of the floor. A mat under the vehicle and wiping up standing meltwater both help.
Coated floors are tough but not immune to damage. Floor jacks and jack stands are fine, but heavy point loads, dragging metal, and sharp dropped tools can chip or scratch the surface, so a pad under hard or sharp loads is worth the small effort.
If the floor does get damaged, it is usually repairable. Minor chips and scratches can often be spot-repaired, and a well-kept floor can be recoated years down the line to refresh it rather than replaced.

DIY kits vs. a professional install

The floor-coating kits sold at home improvement stores are appealing for good reason: they are inexpensive and can be done over a weekend. For a low-use floor, a tight budget, or a home you do not plan to keep long, a kit can be a reasonable choice as long as you know what you are getting.
Most kits use a thinner, water-based epoxy and rely on acid etching to prepare the concrete. Etching rarely profiles the slab as well as mechanical grinding, and the thinner film is more vulnerable, which is why DIY floors are the ones most prone to hot-tire pickup and tend to last a few years rather than many. Standard epoxy can also yellow in sunlight.
A professional install differs mostly in prep and materials. Pros grind or shot-blast the concrete for a stronger bond, apply thicker and often UV-stable systems such as polyaspartic and full flake, test for slab moisture, and usually stand behind the work with a warranty. Fast-curing systems also return the floor to service quickly.
The tradeoff is cost and effort. A kit costs less in dollars but more in labor and carries a shorter, less certain lifespan; a professional job costs more upfront but buys prep, durability, and time. Neither is universally right.
A useful way to decide is to weigh how long you will keep the home, how hard the floor will be used, your budget, and your appetite for the work. Match those honestly and the right path usually becomes clear.
